Canadas 2010 mens Olympic hockey team wont be named until December 30th, but CTVOlympics. Ray Rice Womens Jersey .ca has a weekly evaluation of many of the players under consideration for roster spots. Each Tuesday, we will consider the statistics of each player in their NHL games up to the previous Sunday and consult our Olympic hockey experts. These are our observations for this week: Stock Up - Forwards Dustin Penner – 3GP, 3G, 3A, +5 - It caused a bit of a stir this past week when Kevin Lowe stated that Penner was one of six players who were not originally invited to orientation camp who are now on Team Canadas radar. One of the big reasons, other than his breakout season, is how well he has worked in the past with Corey Perry and Ryan Getlaf. That combo was dominant for the Ducks during their Stanley Cup run in 2007 and could be reunited again come February. Penner appears to be real close, however he may be on the outside looking in. Dany Heatley –  3GP, 2G, 2A, +2 - A change of scenery has done wonders for Heatley as he continues to score goals at a torrid pace and remains on track for the third 50 goal campaign of his career. It seems unlikely that all three Sharks forwards (Heatley, Joe Thornton, Patrick Marleau) up for roster spots will be on the final team due to past playoff failures, however it would seem as though Heatley has the best shot of the three to skate in Vancouver. Eric Staal –  4GP, 1G, 3A, +1 - Prior to the start of the season, the eldest Staal brother was a mortal lock for Canada at the Olympics. An injury ravaged first half, paired with mediocre offensive numbers has pushed Staal way down the depth charts. His speed and versatility may be his saving graces; however the odds may be stacked too high against him at this point. Others forwards trending upwards: Joe Thornton, Derek Roy, John Tavares Stock Down - Forwards Steve Stamkos –  3GP, 0G, 0G, -3 - The kid has cooled off in a big way and has not scored a goal in eight games and has only one assist over that same period. He is also battling an upper body injury, which cant help his production. Not so long ago it appeared as though Stamkos had forced his way onto the team; now it appears as though he has played his way off of it. Marc Savard –  2GP, 0G, 0A, -1 - There was a lot of noise made when Savard was originally left off of Canadas orientation camp roster, however since returning from a broken foot he has yet to display the offensive touch that would have put him in contention in the first place. Outside of a big game in a blowout against the Maple Leafs, Savard does not quite yet appear up to game speed. In a short tournament, Team Canada cannot afford to give anyone extra time to find their legs. Savard first has to get where he needs to be for the Bruins before worrying about the Olympics. Ryan Getzlaf –  3GP, 0G, 1A, -1 - While Getzlafs roster spot has already been written in ink, it has to be a little worrisome to Team Canadas brass that he has only six goals on the season, and just one in the last seven games. Canada needs their best players to play like their best players in Vancouver, and if an offensive talent like Getzlaf is not finding the back of the net it limits the teams overall effectiveness. Other forwards trending downward: Jordan Staal, Andy McDonald, Brendan Morrow Stock Up - Defence Francois Beauchemin –  4GP, 1G, 2A, +1 - For two weeks in a row Beauchemins prospects have been on the upswing. He is easily playing his best hockey of the season and the Leafs fortunes also appear to be on the rise. He has the ability to be a top shutdown defender, but unfortunately for Beauchemin there are several standing between him and a roster spot for Canada. Chris Pronger –  4GP, 0G, 2A, E - Perhaps a coaching change in Philadelphia marks a return to form for Pronger. The team has too much talent to struggle the way they have so far and it is at least partly Prongers responsibility to help turn things around. He seems to be pointed in the right direction again, which is a great sign for both the Flyers and team Canada. Drew Doughty - 4GP, 1G, 1A, +2 - The Kings are the biggest surprise in the NHL this season, and the development of their sophomore superstar is one of the primary reasons why. There is very little that Doughty cant do, and what makes it even more remarkable is that he can now be considered one of the NHLs premier defencemen at age 20. Unfortunately his age may work against him in terms of an Olympic roster spot. Canada would likely prefer to take a known commodity in a veteran blueliner rather than a youngster like Doughty. He will get his opportunity to wear the Maple Leaf at some point; he may just have to wait his turn. Other defencemen trending upwards: Duncan Keith, Brent Seabrook, Tyler Myers Stock Down - Defence Dion Phaneuf - 4GP, 0G, 0A, -2 --- Jay Bouwmeester  -  4GP, 0G, 0A, -1 --- Robyn Regehr - 4GP, 0G, 0A, -1 - It was not a terribly good week for Flames defenders who are battling for Olympic roster spots. Between them, Phaneuf, Bouwmeester and Regehr combined for zero points and a minus-4 rating. In addition trade winds have been swirling around Calgary, with Phaneufs name mentioned the most frequently. There is a possibility that team Canadas defensive corps could feature no Flames come February. Brent Burns - Injured Reserve - Burns nightmare season continues as the Ajax, Ontario native suffered a setback in his recovery from a concussion and is now scheduled to be sidelined until at least January. Heading into the season, Burns star was definitely on the rise, but injuries and poor play means that he is moving backwards rather than forwards. Hopefully for his sake he can get back on the ice and re-establish himself as an up-and-coming blueliner for the Wild. As for the Olympics, it is likely not going to happen for him this time around. Other defencemen trending downward: Marc Staal, Stephane Robidas, Dan Hamhuis Stock Up - Goaltending Martin Brodeur  - 4GP, 3W, 1.75GAA, .922SP - Just when you think Brodeur has reached his peak, he pulls out a week like the past seven days where he cements his reputation as the top netminder in the world. The number one spot in net for Canada remains his to lose. It is difficult to foresee any scenario under which he relinquishes it. While he likely will not start every game of the round robin, he will be Canadas man between the pipes once the games start to matter. Roberto Luongo  - 3GP, 2W, 2.68GAA, .911SP - While Brodeur continues to add to his credentials, Luongo is doing virtually the same thing on the West Coast. The competition for the starting goaltender role will likely go down to the wire and will depend upon who is playing the best heading into the tournament. Should Brodeur stumble, Bobby Lu will be there to pick up the pieces. Other goaltenders on the upswing: Steve Mason Stock Down - Goaltending Cam Ward  - 2GP, 3.50GAA, .900SP - The good news is that Ward has recovered from a leg laceration and is back on the ice for the Hurricanes. The bad news is that he has dropped so far down the depth charts for Canada he is now likely out of the mix altogether. For a player on a struggling team who is recovering from a significant injury, a two week break in February is a better idea than sitting in the press box for Canada anyways. Chris Mason  - 1GP, 4.00GAA, .818SP - Mason has done yeomans work this season between the pipes for a disappointing Blues team. His mediocre numbers are more of a result of the team in front of him, rather than his own play. That being said it is up to a goaltender to steal a couple of games when his team is not firing on all cylinders. Mason has not been able to do so this season in St. Louis and will likely not be doing it for Canada in Vancouver either. Other goaltenders on the downtrend: J.S. Giguere Authentic Andre Johnson Jersey . Studio producer Mark Blimke is absolutely floored at how empty the Philips Arena is tonight. Atlanta may be Americas worst sports town. I just referred to Matt Devlin as the "roughest, toughest play-by-play in the business" . Authentic Wes Welker Jersey . Los Angeles squandered a 16-point lead entering the fourth and trailed 91-87 with 2 1/2 minutes to play before scoring the final 11 points. Ryan Gomes totaled 17 points and nine rebounds for the Clippers, who had lost four of five coming in. Wes Welker Jersey . Octavio Dotel (2-0) stranded two runners in a scoreless top half of the tenth to earn the win for the Pirates, who ended a three-game losing streak. Doumit had three hits and an RIB while Andrew McCutchen and Akinori Iwamura each had a pair of hits for Pittsburgh, which finished its homestand with two wins in five games. Von Miller Jersey . The team placed Harang on the 15-day disabled list Sunday, retroactive to Friday, and reinstated third baseman Scott Rolen from the DL to fill the roster spot. Matt Schaub Youth Jersey . A Kings spokesman says Doughty will be activated from injured reserve by Thursday, and will be in the lineup for Los Angeles home game against Tampa Bay that night. Former trade official claims export controls not to blame for deficit BEIJING - The United States is unlikely to accept Chinas market economy status (MES) before 2016 and both nations should act according to World Trade Organization (WTO) norms when launching trade remedy cases against each other, Susan G Esserman, a former deputy US trade representative, told China Daily. Esserman, who served in the post during the Clinton administration and now the partner of Steptoe & Johnson LLP in charge of trade and WTO issues, suggested China allow its currency rise, claiming that yuan revaluation was in Chinas interests and that US export controls were not a major source of the trade deficit with China. She added that she did not expect the US to give the nod to Chinas MES before 2016 as there are strong views about that in the US and there is no major change underway. As a precondition to entering the WTO in 2001, China accepted some restrictive clauses, one of which was that Chinas MES could not be automatically granted worldwide until 2016. New Zealand was the first nation to accept Chinas MES in 2004, and has been followed by 80 other nations and regions, but major economies such as the US and the European Union have yet to do so. Its an unreasonable practice that a nation is still regarded as a non-market economy after it has joined the WTO, said Zhou Shijian, a senior fellow at the Center for US-China Relations affiliated to Tsinghua Unniversity and a senior WTO expert. Joe Flacco Jersey. It is a double standard when the US declines to accept Chinas MES. The US aims to deliberately make things difficult for China, such as initiating more trade remedy cases, he said. In 1998, the US and EU agreed to accept Russias MES, but Russia has yet to enter the WTO. Non-market economy status is a source of frequent trade remedy cases against China. During the past few years, China has become the major target of trade protectionism worldwide, with the US initiating the largest number of cases. In August 2009, the US said it appreciated Chinas progress in market reform, and would accept Chinas MES as soon as possible through cooperation. Its no use pleading or waiting for their nod. We have to continuously push to force them to make some compromise, said Scott Liu from Scott Liu & Associates, a major law firm in charge of trade remedy cases concerning China and the US. Chinas currency issue is sensitive in the US. There is a wide array of expert opinion that the renminbi is undervalued and I think currency revaluation is in Chinas sovereign interest from a long-term perspective, said Esserman. The US has claimed that an undervalued yuan is a major source of its huge trade deficit with China. But figures have proved currency fluctuations have no impact on trade balance as expected, and Chinese government said export restrictions set by the US are what had mainly led to the trade surplus with the US.
